Required Student Fees

Required Student Fees (RSF) serve campus and promote the needs of students. Revenue from the Required Student Fees totals around $24 million each fiscal year.

The Required Student Fee process takes the full academic year to complete. The Fee package is proposed by a Required Student Fee Committee made up of only students from the student body and passed by Student Senate.
The Student Program Funding Administration supports Student Senate in this process.

The Required Student Fee process happens over the full academic year. The Required Student Fee package is proposed by a Required Student Fee Committee made up of only students from the student body and passed by Student Senate.

In the Fall semester committee members are elected. Members are voted in by Student Senate but can be any currently enrolled student. Membership can be found in the Student Senate Constitution.
The committee is chaired by the Student Senate Finance Council Chair. In the fall they administer the RSF survey to the student body, attend training on the RSF process, and prepare for presentations and deliberations in the spring.

In the Spring semester, typically over one week, the RSF Committee hears presentations from each of the Fee entities. After the presentations, the committee deliberates to decide a proposed Required Student Fee package.
This package is then presented to Student Senate’s Finance Council for discussion, comments from the university community, and a vote.
If passed, the package moves to Student Senate Assembly for the same steps.  If failed, it returns to the RSF Committee to re-deliberate based on comments and recommendations from the Finance Council.

Once a package is finalized and passed by Student Senate Assembly, it goes to University Leadership and KBOR as part of the full university tuition package for approval.

After a RSF package has been approved, Student Senate is able to further allocate funding based on projected revenues to be collected from fees. This includes the Student Senate Activity Fee, Community Development Fund Fee, and Educational Opportunity Fund Fee.

Student Senate Activity Fee supports registered student organizations, long-established programs and initiatives, and departments at the university. This includes Line Funding, Block Funding, and Wednesday Night Funding.

Community Development Fund Fee supports registered student organizations who promote community life and intercultural education at the university.

Educational Opportunity Fund Fee supports university departments, units, or affiliated organizations to support students enrolled in courses on the Lawrence Campus or Edwards Campus.

Each of these funds have their own committees, applications, eligibility requirements, and process. In-depth information about fund eligibility and the Requited Student Fee process can be found in the Student Senate Constitution, in the KU Policy Library.

Student Senate authorizes the Required Student Fees in the Student Senate Budget Book.
