Block Funding
Block Funding supports long-established programs and initiatives and must be applied for in Spring. Block Funding is allocated following the Required Student Fee process by a Student Senate Committee and can only be spent in the following academic year.
Organizations must provide a broad tangible benefit to the University and demonstrate viability in its ability to continue its functions.
For providing budget and bookkeeping services, organizations must include a university staff member.
For collecting allocated revenues, organizations must have a university cost center.
Organizations must have been established at the University and continually funded by Student Senate for at least three years or be able to provide yearly audits of its activities for the past three years prior to applying for Block Funding.
In-depth information about fund eligibility can be found in the Student Senate Constitution, in the KU Policy Library.
Applying for Block Funding:
Applications for Block Funding are submitted in Spring for use the next academic (fiscal) year.
Applications can be found on KU Engage (formerly known as Rock Chalk Central).
Applications must be applied for before the Required Student Fee process ends.
Organizations seeking Block Funding submit applications which are reviewed by the Student Senate Treasurer for constitutional compliance.
Applications allow organizations to complete requests for more than one event or project in one application.
For questions regarding the Block Funding process, please contact the Student Senate Treasurer.
Allocation Process:
Block Funding Committee, made up of students elected by Student Senate, reviews all applications and submits a proposal for allocations.
Block Funding Committee cannot meet until a Required Student Fee package has passed in the Spring semester.
The proposal for Block Funding is reviewed as legislation by the Student Senate Finance Council and then by the Students’ Assembly.
Once a proposal is approved, Student Senate’s Treasurer will communicate to organizations who have been awarded funding.
Allocations of Block Funding shall be disbursed directly to the organization’s cost centers and administered by the receiving department. These allocations may be used at the organization’s discretion, provided that this use does not contradict information submitted to the Student Senate.
Allocations of Block Funding are effective for the fiscal year in which they are allocated. Outstanding portions of all allocations will carry forward to Student Senate.
